DENTAL SERVICES

Dentå offers a wide range of services, from dental check-ups to the most demanding procedures, provided by our highly experienced dentists, specialist dentists, dental hygienists, nurses and technicians. We use state-of-the-art equipment to ensure treatment is as painless as possible, taking into account our customers’ wishes and needs. We are committed to our patients' best interests and ensuring a comfortable treatment experience.

A toothache can occur suddenly. If your toothache is accompanied by swelling, you should see a dentist as soon as possible. Swelling is a sign of infection, which may lead to a serious condition.

We also treat dental injuries and broken teeth as an on-call service. If your tooth wobbles or comes loose, you should see a dentist immediately.

During weekends, holiday eves and public holidays, we charge higher fees. On Saturdays and the eves of public holidays (e.g. Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, Midsummer Eve), the price may be increased by up to 15%, and on Sundays and public holidays, by up to 30%.

If you have any concerns about booking an appointment, please contact our customer service team, who can assess the urgency of your need for treatment.

During a dental check-up, we examine your oral health, including the teeth, gums, tongue, mucous membranes, as well as your jaw joints and bite. Many dental problems develop slowly and may go unnoticed. Chronic inflammation of the mouth puts you at risk of cardiovascular diseases, among other things. Oral infections also influence the treatment of diabetes and rheumatism.

Kela reimburses the cost of an oral and dental examination by a dentist once every two years. However, reimbursement may be granted once a year if the dentist's examination shows that the customer’s health requires an annual oral and dental check-up.

X-rays are an important part of oral diagnostics. They allow us to examine areas that the naked eye cannot see. Intraoral X-rays, usually taken during a dental check-up, enable the dentist to observe spaces between teeth, see under old fillings and assess the level of the alveolar bone. If necessary, we will also take X-rays of a symptomatic tooth or teeth that have undergone root canal treatment in the past to detect possible infections. We use the latest imaging technology, including panoramic and 3D X-ray equipment.

The dentist can refer you to a dental hygienist for tartar removal if necessary. With a referral from your dentist, you will receive a Kela reimbursement for your dental hygienist appointment.

Dental fillings are used to repair damaged, worn or chipped teeth when the damage has reached the dentine. A composite filling is the most typical filling material. In cases of more extensive damage, the preferred option is a ceramic filling, often made outside the mouth.

Local anaesthesia is typically used for dental filling procedures, ensuring a painless procedure.

The most common cause of toothache is a deep cavity in the tooth that has irritated the pulp, the core of the tooth. A deep filling close to the pulp can also cause irritation and a toothache. When the pulp becomes inflamed, swelling forms in the tissue, causing pressure in the pulp cavity. A tooth infection can also occur without noticeable symptoms, and the quietly progressing pulp necrosis may go untreated.

The inflammation progresses outside the root tip, creating a pocket of infection in the jawbone. As pus accumulates in the pocket, it can cause pain. Pus tends to discharge in the direction of least resistance, forming a pimple-like bump on the gum.

In the early stages of an infection, the tooth exhibits symptoms only when exposed to external stimuli, like heat or cold. In this case, the pain is still brief, and the symptom ceases when the irritation is gone. In a more advanced infection, temperature fluctuations, chewing or tapping can cause prolonged pain in the jawbone. If left untreated, the infection progresses. The typical symptoms include intense, throbbing pain often caused by a hot stimulus. In this case, even a gentle touch to the tooth can cause excruciating pain.
At its worst, the pain can be so severe that it radiates widely, and locating the tooth causing the pain may be challenging.

In case of a chipped tooth or severe tooth decay beyond repair, the tooth will have to be extracted. A partially erupted wisdom tooth may also require removal, and tooth extraction can also be performed as part of orthodontic treatment.

Careful local anaesthesia ensures that tooth extraction is a completely painless procedure.

The pulp is the tooth’s innermost layer located within its hard shell, containing nerves and blood vessels. Root canal treatment may be needed if your tooth is injured or a deep cavity has harmed the pulp. Signs of damage to the pulp include sensitivity to heat or chewing and a throbbing or aching pain. Sometimes, the tooth may show no symptoms, and the damage may be discovered by chance through an X-ray.

Root canal treatment involves cleaning and disinfecting the tooth's root canal. Finally, the root canals are filled with root filling. Local anaesthesia is used during a root canal procedure.

A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment is always weaker than a healthy tooth. This is why we often recommend a ceramic filling or crown for the tooth to prevent it from chipping or cracking.

Are you afraid of going to the dentist? Have you had a bad experience that makes it difficult or impossible?
This is perfectly normal. Please feel free to bring up the matter at our clinic. We can already make the situation easier by discussing the issue and considering your individual needs. There are also other ways to treat fear, such as anxiety-relieving medication and dental treatment under general anaesthesia.

Visit our clinic to learn about the different options!

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a speciality combining medicine and dentistry and requires a minimum of five years of training. The speciality includes:

  • difficult surgical tooth extractions
  • placement of dental implants
  • repair of tissue loss in the jaw area, e.g. dental bone graft
  • treatment of facial fractures
  • treatment of various infections
  • treatment of oral mucosal diseases
  • treatment of tumours and cysts of the mucous membranes of the jaws and mouth
  • dento-facial orthopaedics
  • surgical treatment of jaw joints
  • surgical treatment of developmental disturbances

Before a surgical procedure, the patient should have a consultation to discuss the following issues

  • the treatment plan, so that the patient understands the purpose and aim of the procedure
  • any underlying medical conditions, recent medications and allergies (bring an up-to-date patient history form to the appointment)
  • previous procedures and any problems they may have caused
  • the implementation of the upcoming procedure
  • the patient's wishes regarding the procedure and its timing; anxiety-relieving medication or general anaesthesia are also possible (see dental treatment under general anaesthesia)

Dental implants can replace one or more missing teeth or provide additional support for an unstable denture. A dental implant, or artificial tooth root, is simply a screw made of titanium that is inserted into the patient's jawbone.

To ensure a good prognosis for the dental implant, it's essential to assess the patient’s individual risk factors and conduct an examination to ensure there is sufficient bone and soft tissue around the planned dental implant. Clinical and radiological examinations are conducted before the procedure. If tissue loss is found, the treatment may involve tissue repair surgery (such as soft tissue or bone grafting), or the issue may be repaired during the placement of a dental implant.

A visible prosthetic structure (crown, bridge or removable denture) is attached to the dental implant. Sometimes, a prosthetic structure can be attached to the implant immediately, but this is usually not done until after the implant has ossified, after 3 to 6 months at the earliest.

With correct indications, carefully implemented surgical and prosthetic phases, proper self-care and professional cleaning, dental implants have a good survival rate. The general recommendation is for dental implant patients to undergo professional dental cleaning at least every six months and have regular dental check-ups. Over time, parts that wear out may also need replacing.

Dental implants as a treatment option can either be simple and quick or very challenging and time-consuming. Each case is unique, which is why the cost and duration of treatment will also vary. When planning the treatment, we will discuss these issues with each patient individually and provide a cost estimate. Please feel free to make an appointment to discuss your wishes regarding missing teeth or poorly fitting dentures.

DENTURES::

In addition to fixed dentures, missing teeth can be replaced with removable dentures, including complete dentures, partial dentures, metal partial dentures and implant-supported dentures. Partial dentures are held in place by metal hooks which attach to the natural teeth.

  • Partial Dentures are made of acrylic plastic, and they rest on the oral mucosa, blending in with the remaining natural teeth. Partial dentures are held in place by metal hooks which attach to your own teeth.
  • Metal partial dentures are partial dentures with a metal frame. The frame rests on the remaining teeth and is held in place with metal clips. Metal dentures are more expensive than partial dentures, but they have better functionality. Compared to plastic partial dentures, metal partial dentures offer benefits such as a lighter structure, snugger fit and easier cleaning of tooth necks.
  • Complete dentures are made of acrylic plastic, and they are used to replace all missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw. A complete denture rests on the oral mucosa. In the upper jaw, its attachment is based on a tight air seal between the denture and the mucosa, while complete lower dentures are held in place by the alveolar ridge and gravity.
  • An implant-supported complete denture attaches to dental implants with special fasteners.

Dentures require daily cleaning, just like your own teeth. Well-maintained dentures and residual dentition, combined with regular dental check-ups, ensure the longevity of the dentures. From time to time, dentures need to be modified due to changes in the teeth and jawbone. Dentures may also need to be repaired if they break, feel loose or uncomfortable.

OCCLUSAL SPLINTS:

Occlusal splints are used to manage disorders of the masticatory system, such as pain in the masticatory muscles and jaw joints, as well as teeth grinding (i.e. bruxism). They also protect the teeth, prosthetic structures and jaw joints from wear and tear.

Occlusal splints are manufactured from transparent plastic material suitable for the mouth, shaped in the form of the upper or lower dental arch.

Occlusal splint therapy is started after an examination and diagnosis by a dentist. The dentist will use either a 3D scanner or traditional impression material to capture an impression of your teeth. The models are then sent to a dental laboratory where the occlusal splints are made. During your next appointment, the splints are shaped to fit your mouth. Follow-up appointments are scheduled as needed to assess the outcome of treatment.

SLEEP APNOEA MOUTH GUARDS::

Treating sleep apnoea typically involves lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, quitting smoking and increasing physical activity. If lifestyle changes aren’t enough, CPAP is the most effective treatment. In milder cases, a mouth guard can also be used to treat sleep apnoea. The mouth guard is custom-made by a specialist dentist at the dental clinic.

Gingivitis is a common condition in adults, manifesting as bleeding gums, for example, when brushing teeth.
If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a chronic inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth, called periodontitis. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss, and it also plays a role in the treatment of conditions such as diabetes and rheumatism.

Proper home care, including regular brushing of your teeth in the mornings and evenings, is essential in treating gum diseases. Cleaning between teeth regularly by flossing or using interdental brushes is also important. At the dental clinic, dental plaque and contributing factors, like tartar or uneven dental fillings, are removed from the tooth surfaces. If necessary, antimicrobial therapy can be used to support treatment. The goal of the treatment is to stop the progression of dental tissue loss and gingivitis. Smoking and general conditions like diabetes can impact treatment response and are risk factors for periodontal disease. Post-treatment maintenance care consisting of cleaning visits and follow-ups is an important part of the overall periodontal treatment. Treatment is implemented in collaboration with a dental hygienist, a dentist and, if necessary, a specialist dentist.

Orthodontic treatment focuses on straightening the teeth using removable or fixed orthodontic appliances. The reasons for orthodontic treatment include bite problems, crowded teeth or aesthetic reasons. Orthodontic treatment is typically started between the ages of 9 and 12 to take advantage of natural jaw growth, but the treatment can also be performed for adults.
The mouth and teeth must be healthy before starting orthodontic treatment. A good level of self-care is a prerequisite for orthodontic treatment.

During a consultation visit, the dentist will go through the various stages of orthodontic treatment and its expected duration, as well as provide a cost estimate.

If you have dental anxiety, treatment under general anaesthesia is also a possibility, provided that your health allows it. General anaesthesia may also be an option if you have a particularly sensitive throat, making dental treatment difficult. If you wish to have dental treatment under general anaesthesia, please make an appointment for a consultation. Before treatment, a clinical and radiological examination is carried out, and a treatment plan and cost estimate are drawn up. Please note you should refrain from eating or drinking for a minimum of six hours before receiving anaesthesia. Take your medicines as directed by your doctor with a small amount of water. All required procedures will be completed in a single session, and you can return home after waking up and being monitored for 1 to 2 hours.

Tartar removal should be done regularly, as tartar and plaque can inflame the gums, leading to issues like bad breath.

Tartar removal is usually done with hand instruments and/or an ultrasound device. Local anaesthesia may be used during the treatment.

We recommend removing tartar at regular intervals, depending on your individual needs. A suitable interval for tartar removal is typically 3–12 months. An appointment for tartar removal also includes personalised self-care guidance, removing surface discolouration from the teeth and, if needed, fluoride treatment.

Teeth whitening performed by an oral health professional is an easy and safe way to achieve a brighter smile. You can whiten your teeth either at the clinic or at home using custom-made whitening trays. During a consultation, we will first assess which whitening method is the most suitable for you.

Your teeth and gums must be healthy before the teeth whitening is performed. If necessary, cavities are repaired, and tartar removal is carried out before the whitening procedure.

Teeth whitening is not recommended for people under 18 years of age or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Teeth whitening results are individual. They are influenced by the whitening method chosen and the initial condition of the teeth.

After whitening, the permanence of the colour depends on factors such as eating habits and self-care. The results can be maintained with regular visits to the dental hygienist and repeating the whitening procedure as needed.

A TMJ (temporomandibular joint) massage focuses on treating the muscles in the facial area. During the treatment, the chewing muscles inside and outside the mouth, along with the neck and shoulders, are massaged. A TMJ massage relieves stiffness and pain in the muscles of the head, as well as relaxes them. You will also receive self-care instructions after the treatment.

Tooth jewellery application is quick and easy. During the procedure, the tooth is cleaned, and then the jewellery is applied to the surface of the tooth with a liquid filling material. Please bring the jewellery with you to the appointment. You can purchase dental jewellery from a jewellery shop, for example.

If required, we can remove the jewellery and then polish the tooth surface.

Dental laminates are shells, typically made from ceramic material, that are attached to the surface of the front teeth. They are commonly used to enhance tooth aesthetics by addressing issues such as tooth wear, misalignment, and discolouration and to enhance tooth durability. The laminate is attached to the tooth’s surface after the tooth has been filed. The goal is to file the tooth while preserving as much of the tooth tissue as possible, depending on the size of the misalignment, the desired result and the extent of old fillings. The durability of laminates, like other prosthetic structures, depends on such factors as self-care, the patient's bite and their diet. The need for orthodontic treatment should be assessed before the dental laminates are fitted. Orthodontic treatment can reduce the need for filing, improving the durability of the tooth.

DENTAL CROWNS

An extensively damaged tooth is weaker than an undamaged tooth. Extensive loss of hard dental tissue may need to be repaired with a strong laboratory-made structure, a dental crown. Dental crowns are typically made of ceramic material, metal or a combination of both.

A dental crown restores the functionality and appearance of the tooth and enables proper cleaning.

When making the crown, the tooth is shaped, preserving as much of the tooth tissue as possible. A 3D scanner or impression material is used to capture an impression of the completed filing. The filed tooth is protected using a temporary filling material. The finished crown is fixed to the tooth with dental cement.

The crown is cleaned in the same way as your own teeth. It's important to keep the seam between the crown and your natural tooth clean to prevent cavities in the tooth's neck or inflammation in the adjacent gum. Occasionally, a mouth guard is needed to protect the structures. With high-quality dental crowns, combined with good self-care and regular check-ups, we can achieve a durable and long-term result.

DENTAL BRIDGES

A dental bridge is a fixed dental prosthesis used to replace missing teeth in the dental arch. The teeth next to the missing tooth are shaped, and a 3D scanner or traditional impression material is used to capture an impression of the teeth.
The dental bridge is made in a dental laboratory using ceramic material, metal or a combination of both. The structure consists of crowns on both sides of the gap, connected by a bridge of replacement teeth. A temporary bridge will be used to protect the gap and filed teeth. The completed bridge is fixed to the tooth with dental cement.

Before creating the bridge, the condition of the surrounding tissues, supporting teeth and the patient’s bite should be assessed.

The dental bridge requires care, just like your own teeth. In self-care, it's important to clean the spaces between the teeth, including the area between the bridge and the supporting teeth. Occasionally, a mouth guard is needed to protect the structures. In addition to good self-care, regular dental check-ups ensure the longevity of the dental bridge.

Clear aligner treatment refers to orthodontic treatment with transparent dental aligners. Clear aligners are discreet and easy to remove, making them a popular and convenient alternative to traditional braces. They can be used to straighten individual teeth for aesthetic reasons or even to correct bite problems. The treatment plan is always tailored based on individual needs.

A simple clear aligner treatment lasts around three to six months with follow-up visits included. The cost of the treatment depends on its complexity and duration.

Did you have an accident? If you have accident insurance, you can choose any public or private dental clinic in Finland, such as Dent Å. The insurance covers dental examinations, necessary imaging and emergency treatment. The goal, when treating an injury, is to restore the teeth to their pre-injury condition. A treatment plan and cost estimate are prepared and submitted to the insurance company for approval. Accident insurance often has a limit up to which the insurance company will pay for treatment. Typically, it is enough to cover even extensive treatment.

Please contact us, and we’ll ensure you receive the care you need!
